Claire's Cottage Classics
Once unleashed, the creative stream ceaselessly spawns new ideas. Claire Murray knows this well, having lived in its force for more than twenty years. Each place she visits deposits new scenes in her imagination. Each artistic person she meets suggests collaboration. And each concept she brings to life leads to yet another. Her hooked rugs, initially inspired by the island of Nantucket, released ideas for bedding, dinnerware, stationery, and a spa line. Cashmere throws and loungewear seemed to follow naturally.
Claire remains best known, of course, for her signature hand-hooked rugs, developed in a period when options were limited: “When I first began making my rugs, it was the time of wall-to-wall carpeting, and the only area rugs were oriental, braided, and a few woven rag rugs. ‘Art-for-the-floor’ rugs did not exist prior to my creating this new concept.”
