Claire remains best known, of course, for her signature hand-hooked rugs, developed in a period when options were limited: “When I first began making my rugs, it was the time of wall-to-wall carpeting, and the only area rugs were oriental, braided, and a few woven rag rugs. ‘Art-for-the-floor’ rugs did not exist prior to my creating this new concept.”
