The fascination took hold on wintry Sunday afternoons, when she and
four other bundled siblings were set loose in museums to roam free
and discover treasures.
What was jewelry maker Genevieve Hunt’s favorite find? The mineral
room, where amethyst geodes, studded with crystals, wowed her with
their intense natural beauty. When the children weren’t traversing
museum hallways, they were often in art classes or shopping for
fabrics with their mother, a talented seamstress. She systematically
immersed each child in the art of craft—that is, until Genevieve came
along. The youngest of five jokes, “When my time came to learn the
skills, I was always sent out to play. In the late ’70s, my mother
had already moved onto Victorian wreath making and topiaries. I
missed the whole textile movement in my family.”
