Venice, Italy, is one of the most captivating cities in the world— revered for its past glories, its colorful history, its arresting architecture, and its friendly people. While Venice is celebrated for the Basilica di San Marco, Rialto Bridge, Ca’ d’Oro palazzo, and Doge’s Palace, the city’s waterways and distinctive vessels give it its true soul.

An archipelago of 118 islands dotting a marshy lagoon, Venice boasts 180 canals and over 400 bridges. In addition to appellations like “City of Light” and “City of Bridges,” it is also known as the “City of Water.” A visit to Venice would not be complete without a gondola tour of the great canals, narrow waterways, and ancient bridges. “The gondola is a genius creature of naval construction kissed by a poet,” says Alexandra “Alex” Hai, a 40-year old woman who is the city’s only female gondolier. “Being a gondolier means to be one with the gondola who is one with Venice.”
