There is a place in the American heartland filled with wonderment—a place where more than a hundred artisans synthesize their creative energies to transform rustic tree branches and milled lumber into whimsical furnishings and accessories. Like a baton in a relay race, every hand-made design fashioned at Sticks, Inc.’s award-winning studio in Des Moines, Iowa, passes through the hands of highly skilled crafters, who inspirit the wood with soulful drawings that are then burned into place and painted in jewel tones. They enchant tables, chairs, lamps, and objets d’art, and these animated forms in turn stir our emotions and lift our spirits. In one piece, a songbird rests on a branch attached to a wall clock. His presence atop the timepiece seems designed to slow us in our tracks, encouraging us to ponder the sweet sentiments encircling the clock’s dial: “Build Sandcastles,” “Collect Shells,” and “Share.” Similar artistry bewitches a mirror, and its mystical images of the sun, moon, birds, bees, and flowers work in tandem with notions that suggest we stop scrutinizing our reflections and instead reflect on mantras such as “See the World,” “Treasure Friends,” and “Respect Nature.”
