The Queen of Napa Valley
Children of creative parents sometimes live near storybook childhoods whose magic they may only completely comprehend from the vantage point of age. During those early years, legendary people pass through their front doors as ordinary folk, sit down for coffee at their kitchen tables, and amuse the younger ones with tales and games. Life was like that for young Heidi Peterson and her sister, Holly, living in California’s Napa Valley in the 1960s and early 1970s.
“Justin Meyer, who was winemaker at Christian Brothers at the time, used to stop by to make pizza and play the banjo,” Heidi recalls one late afternoon after a session of moving wine barrels around with a forklift at her La Sirena winery. “Wine families such as the Tchelistcheffs and the Martinis used to come by for dinner. André bought some paintings from my mom, who is an artist. There are a lot of great people in the wine industry. I think wine really attracts people who love life.”
